The 45th World Chess Olympiad takes place in Budapest Wed 11th Sep to Sun 22nd Sep 2024. The USA followed closely by India are the top two seeds. Then 3 China, Uzbekistan, Netherlands, Norway, and England. Russia are not playing due to their war with Ukraine. Leading players Carlsen, Caruana, Erigaisi, Abdusattorov, Gukesh, Wei Yi. India, Georgia, Poland and China are the top seeds in the women's events, should be pretty great. Read more ....

The chess.com Speed Chess Final took place in Paris Fri 6th Sep to Sun 8th Sep 2024. Magnus Carlsen faced Hans Moke Niemann for the first time since he lost to him in the Sinquefield Cup in 2022. Although these games were still played over the internet on chess.com they were at least in the same room. Carlsen won handily. Alireza Firouzja beat Hikarua Nakamura to reach the final. Nakamura beat Niemann to finish third and then Carlsen trounced Firouzja 23.5-7.5 in the final. Read more ....

Players: Anish Giri, Fabiano Caruana, Ian Nepomniachtchi, Nodirbek Abdusattorov, Maxime Vachier-Lagrave, Rameshbabu Praggnanandhaa, Gukesh Dommaraju, Alireza Firouzja, Wesley So and Ding Liren. The Saint Louis Rapid & Blitz took place 12th to 16th August 2024. Players: Hikaru Nakamura, Fabiano Caruana, Ian Nepomniachtchi, Nodirbek Abdusattorov, Wesley So, Alireza Firouzja, R Praggnanandhaa, Leinier Dominguez Perez, Levon Aronian and Maxime Vachier-Lagrave. It also acted as a curtain raiser for the Sinquefield Cup which starts on the 18th. Alireza Firouzja won the event and took the lead of the Grand Chess Tour from Fabiano Caruana with the Sinquefield Cup to finish this year's series.

110th British Chess Championships took place 25th Jul to Sun 4th Aug 2024.David Wl Howell, Michael Adams, Gawain Cb Jones, Luke J Mcshane, Stuart C Conquest, Ameet K Ghasi, Svyatoslav Bazakutsa, Shreyas Royal, Harry Grieve, Eldar Gasanov, Matthew J Wadsworth, Simon K Williams etc. In one of the best championship in many years there was a close finish and a tie-break match between David Howell and Gawain Jones after they tied on 7/9. Jones came from behind to beat Howell 2.5-1.5. This was a real heartening return for an event that I feared for only quite recently. 15 year old Shreyas Royal secured the GM title with his draw against Michael Adams in the final round, he says this was his fifth attempt to secure the title. Leading players Magnus Carlsen, Ding Liren, Ian Nepomniachtchi etc. Fourth seeds Al-Ain ACMG UAE won the rapid title ahead of Decade China Team and the favourites WR Chess Team.
