Fridrik Olafsson 26 January 1935 to 6 April 2025 was the first Icelandic GM and Candidate after finishing tied 5th–6th in the 1958 Interzonal. He was an amateur player at the time and went on to finish 7th of 8th in the 1959 Candidates in Bled, Zagreb, and Belgrade. Olafsson continued to be an active player almost his entire life. His 3rd place in the first Piatigorsky Cup in 1963 was probably his best result. He turned professional in 1974.
He became FIDE president in 1978 but lost after one term in 1982 when the Soviet Union decided to support his deputy Florencio Campomanes.
