Malcolm Pein looks at England's win against Norway in Round 6 of the Olympiad and in particular Michael Adams win against Magnus Carlsen.
England number one Michael Adams led his team to victory by dispatching world number one Magnus Carlsen with a sacrificial attack in the sixth round of the Chess Olympiad at Khanty Mansisk. Carlsen was worse for most of the game after playing a very dubious opening line, invented by the Dutch opening innovator Gerard Welling and briefly taken up by Tony Miles.
The idea involves Black's knight lurching from f6 to h5 on move three and then back to g7 as the move pawn g7-g6 is not the prelude to a fianchetto. It isn't quite as bad as it looks but Miles told me he played it mainly to wind his opponents up.
Carlsen played it a little differently, but it looked like he was ever so slightly, trying to take the Mickey out of Mickey. The joke was on the young Norwegian in the end. This should add an edge to their forthcoming battle at the 2nd London Chess Classic in December.
When the team lists were published it seemed like England should edge the contest, providing Adams was able to hold Carlsen, because the Norwegians were outrated on the other three boards. It didn't turn out like that. The Norwegians played fairly soundly with white and Luke McShane never looked like being better in his game.
