FIDE Rating List (January 2012)
England has five players in top 100 in the world
IM Malcolm Pein - Thursday 12th January 2012
IM Malcolm Pein reports that England has five players in the top 100 in the world for the first time in many years with the addition of Gawain Jones rising to 97th in the World.
England has five active players ranked in the world's top 100 for the first time in many years. The FIDE rating list for January shows Michael Adams, Luke McShane, Nigel Short, Matthew Sadler and Gawain Jones are all in the elite. Jones' ascent to 2653 is very impressive and he is ranked England number five. Matthew Sadler is 2660, up from 2625, the rating he was at when he took a six year break from the game. Sadler returns to elite tournament play this weekend, after recent success in Opens, when he plays in the Wijk aan Zee C group.
Magnus Carlsen sits atop the list by a huge margin of 30 points with Levon Aronian now in second after Vishy Anand's awful year which saw him drop to 2799. Vladimir Kramnik is the third player over 2800. There are seven Russians in the top 20 and 23 in the top 100.
