Praggnanandhaa won the Superbet Classic in Bucharest, his second major title of the year after winning Wijk aan Zee at the start of February. Again it took a tie-break for Praggnanandhaa to win, this time against MVL and Alireza Firouzja. The FIDE Women's Grand Prix in Grosslobming was won by Anna Muzychuk on tie-break from Zhu Jiner but the winner admitted that she wasn't happy as the result meant that Zhu Jiner and Goryachkina as she missed out very narrowly, she needed sole first place. Just today Jonas Buhl Bjerre edged out Volodar Murzin on tie-break to win the Capablanca Memorial. Tomorrow one of my very favourite tournaments of the year, the Sigeman & Co Chess Tournament starts, again with a very nice field of Richard Rapport, Javokhir Sindarov, Ray Robson, Nils Grandelius, Vasyl Ivanchuk, Erwin L'Ami, Tan Zhongyi and Yagiz Kaan Erdogmus. Also the Chess.com Classic starts with round 1 pairings of Carlsen-Duda, MVL-Caruana, Abdusattorov-Lazavik, Wei Yi-Artemiev, Nakamura-Aronian, Ding Liren-Praggnanandhaa, Gukesh-Fedoseev, Nepomniachtchi-Arjun.
Finally there was sad news last Tuesday with the news of the passing of Vlastimil Hort, one of the most popular players of his generation.

The Doctor
The Grand Chess Tour Superbet Chess Classic Romania took place in Bucharest 7th to 16th May 2025. Players: D Gukesh, Fabiano Caruana, Nodirbek Abdusattorov, R Praggnanandhaa, Alireza Firouzja, Wesley So, Levon Aronian, Krzysztof Duda Jan, Maxime Vachier-Lagrave and Daniel Deac Bogdan.
Praggnanandhaa won the tournament but only after a tie-break blitz against MVL and Firouzja. Praggnanandhaa drew his final round game allowing first MVL and then Firouzja to catch him but he won the third and final game of the blitz tie-break to win the event. This is Praggnanandhaa's second major title of the year after he won Tata Steel following a tie-break at the start of February.

FIDE Women's Grand Prix took place in Grosslobming, Austria Tue 6th May to Fri 16th May 2025. Players: Jiner Zhu, Zhongyi Tan, Anna Muzychuk, Nana Dzagnidze, Mariya Muzychuk, Alexandra Kosteniuk, Rameshbabu Vaishali, Lela Javakhishvili, Olga Badelka and Nurgyul Salimova.
The event was the final in a series of 6. The top two in the final standings qualifying for the Candidates. The leaders going into the event were Aleksandra Goryachkina followed by Humpy Koneru, neither playing in the final event. Goryachkina looked strong favourite to qualify but if Anna Muzychuk had won and Zhu Jiner finished second then she would have missed out. Zhu started with 0/2 after losing to Anna Muzychuk but came back with five wins in a row before seeing out the event with two draws. Anna Muzychuk took first place on tie-break from Zhu but they shared grand prix points and this was not enough to overtake Goryachkina, only a win alone would have done that. So it was Zhu Jiner who won the Grand Prix and Goryachkina finished second. There are other routes to the Candidates including the Women's World Cup (3 places), the Grand Swiss (2 places) and the FIDE Women’s Events 2024-25 series 1 place. which takes place in 2026 and the complete field is yet to be decided.

Players: Volodar Murzin, Jonas Buhl, Bjerre, Evgeny Romanov, Arseniy Nesterov and Carlos Daniel Albornoz Cabrera.
Jonas Buhl Bjerre just edged out Volodar Murzin after they both scored 5.5/8. Dylan Isidro Berdayes Ason won the open with 7.5/9.

Yuxin Song won on tie-break from Mungunzul Xeniya Balabayeva and Vantika after all finished on 7/9. Ivan won Zemlyanskii the bltiz with 8/9. Alua Nurman won the women's blitz on tie-break from Valentina Gunina.

Titled Tuesday Blitz has two sections called early and late. The 13th May events saw Magnus Carlsen win the early and Hans Niemann win the late. In the late event Nakamura-Justin Zhide Wang finished 1-0 in 810 moves (if they were going for the longest game they could manage, the resignation at the end was a bit strange). There have been an increasing number (still just the odd one every few events) of these artificially inflated games in Titled Tuesday but this takes it to a level way beyond what I've seen before. 810 moves should make it not worth people's while now maybe? That takes real commitment. The game is in full in the PGN but I have to cut games over 250 moves in the CBH format and I cut this after 107 when the last black piece disappeared. A second game in the same event lasted 290 moves.

The Czech GM Vlastimil Hort has passed away at the age of 81. Born in Kladno on January 12th 1944 he died in Germany May 12th 2025.
Hort grew up in Czechoslovakia becoming a Grandmaster in 1965. He played the 1967 Sousse Interzonal finishing tied 6th, not enough to advance to the Candidates. He then played Board 4 in the USSR vs the Rest of the World match in 1970. Hort did eventually reach the Candidates in 1977 where he met Boris Spassky. This was also the peak of his career when Hort was world number 6 and rated 2620. Spassky was ill during the match and Hort gave up one of his rest days to aid his recovery after Spassky ran out of his. Hort lost the match narrowly in the end. Hort defected from the Czech Republic in 1985 moving to West Germany where he won the national championships 3 times (to add to his 5 earlier Czech titles). I first saw him on the BBC TV program the Master Game in the early 1980s, he was a memorable character and went on to be a chess commentator for many years in Germany. Hort played regularly up until 2020 and his final published game was in the Czech League in 2022.
