24th Leon Masters 2011 (4)

Anand has fine win with Caro-Kann on day 2

Viswanathan Anand won day 2 in Leon 1.5-0.5 as he did on day one. This time it was a fine win on the black side of a Caro-Kann. Malcolm Pein takes a look.

The 13th world champion Garry Kasparov had a huge plus score against Alexei Shirov. His successorVladimir Kramnik has often found the Latvian attacking genius a difficult opponent. The reigning world champion Vishy Anand seems to enjoy playing the man known as 'the heir to Mikhail Tal' and he crushed him a second time at the 24th Leon Masters

Anand produced a stunning novelty on the sixth move and the game was all but over when for the second time in the match, Shirov's king was trapped in the centre. He resigned after just 17 moves. It may appear premature but White's position is hopeless.

The fourth game was a quiet draw but Anand could probably have pressed had he felt so inclined. Anand leads the six game Rapid match 3-1, the players have 45 miniutes plus an increment of 30 seconds per move.

Anand sacrifices a pawn but acceptance is risky: 9.Qxd5 Qb6 10.Bg2 Bc6 wins; 9.Qxd5 Qb6 10.Bc4 Be6 11.Bb5+ Nc6 12.Qg2 Nge7 looks good for Black; White has weaknesses and lags in development - he will lose his extra pawn; 9.Qxd5 Qb6 10.Bc4 Bxf2+ 11.Ke2 Bxg4+ 12.Nf3 Be6 13.Qe4 is less clear.

Today's puzzle. White had just interposed with 28.Rf3 and if 28...Rxf1+ 29.Kxf1 Ra1+ 30.Kf2 Ra2+ is level. How did Black force resignation?
