The 2nd round of the Sparkassen Chess-Meeting on Saturday saw a number of surprises. Vladimir Kramnik shocked everyone including no doubt his opponent Jan Gustafsson by playing the King's Indian Defence as black. Known as a killer of the opening as white he produced a spectacular effort with one blow after another following his excellent 17...Nc6. There has been no more active player in the elite recently than Fabiano Caruana but the first two rounds of Dortmund suggest he may be close to being out of gas. Today he misjudged something just out of the opening because his position was very close to being lost after 21...c4. Ponomariov finished things nicely. Mateusz Bartel didn't get out of the opening intact for the second day running and Sergey Karjakin looked comfortable in refuting his tactical ideas. Naiditsch looked worse after turing down (21. Bxf6 gxf6 22. Qg4 probably equal) but Meier was happy enough with the draw. Leko equalised easily as black against Fridman but no more than that.
