The Sparkassen Chess-Meeting took place in Dortmund 13th-22nd July 2012. Fabiano Caruana won the event on tie-break (more wins) from Sergey Karjakin after both scored 6/9. Ruslan Ponomariov or Arkadij Naiditsch could have won the event having played 5 games with black had they won in the final round. Vladimir Kramnik's challenge failed towards the end, he missed a simple win against Leko and had to settle for a draw after a marathon and then lost to Caruana probably partially as a result too, although his opponent played a fine game. Below are the games and results from the main section, Helmut Kohls tournament (a sponsor of the event rather than after Germany's former champion) and Open A (final standings not available yet)

3 way tie in Dortmund going into the rest day (4-5)

Ruslan Ponomariov, Sergey Karjakin and Vladimir Kramnik share the lead on 3.5/5 going into Wednesday's rest day. Round 3 saw all games drawn but Leko perhaps tired towards the end of a really complicated French Defence against an ambitious Fabiano Caruana. A great struggle. Leaders Vladimir Kramnik and Ruslan Ponomariov drew a Queen's Gambit Accepted where Kramnik could not break down his solid opponent. Daniel Fridman grabbed a hot pawn on the black side of a Caro Kann but Sergey Karjakin always looked likely to take advantage of his misplaced pieces. Fabiano Caruana overpowered the struggling Jan Gustafsson tactically in a complex game. Arkadij Naiditsch got a winning position against tail-ender Mateusz Bartel but didn't finish precisely and had then to play for many hours before grinding out the win. Round 6 is on Thursday 19th July 2012.
