Fabiano Caruana took control of the Tata Steel Masters with a win against tail-ender Vladislav Kovalev in Round 11 with the black pieces. Caruana felt that his opponent's 13.Re1 in combination with 15.f4 (rather than Rc2 and f4) was not a good line and maybe his opponent had confused things. The decisive error seems to have been 21.bxc4 after which white is very close to being lost and very soon Kovalev only had choices between quite miserable moves.

Magnus Carlsen conceded that "tournament victory is out of the question now" following his draw against Jan-Krzysztof Duda. This was a complicated struggle in a Giuoco Piano where Carlsen took some calculated risks and posed some problems for Duda but didn't look close to winning. In Carlsen's mind especially must be his final round game against Wesley So who is pretty much unbeatable with the white pieces if he wants to draw.

Viswanathan Anand returned to 50% with a win against 16 year old Alireza Firouzja who has now lost three in a row, albeit to the World Champion, World Number Two and now a legendary former World Champion. 21.Nd6+? seems to have been a serious mistake after which Anand toyed with the young player for a long time before extracting a win at the end. 20 year old Jorden Van Foreest has also impressed in this event but today he became badly unstuck against Vladislav Artemiev. Van Foreest played one of the sharpest lines of the Sicilian a tempo down as black against an English but he was having to work hard to justify his choice almost from the start and with 22...Nb6? his position became rather bad and his opponent cleaned up effectively.

The remaining games were drawn. Wesley So drew very quickly against Jeffery Xiong. Nikita Vitiugov against Daniil Dubov was a theoretically relevant draw in a sharp line of the Open Ruy Lopez which finished in a perpetual check. Anish Giri couldn't make much headway against one of the very most solid lines of the Petroff's Defence.

In the B-Group David Anton Guijarro is in the box seat with 8/11 a point clear of Nodirbek Abdusattorov and Erwin L'Ami. Anton also seems to have quite a favourable draw for the final two rounds where his opponents currently stand in 11th and last place.
