Caruana leads Tata Steel Masters on 7/10 half a point clear of Carlsen after both win

Fabiano Caruana retained the sole lead on 7/10 of the Tata Steel Masters by defeating Alireza Firouzja in Round 10 of the Tata Steel Masters. Magnus Carlsen had an easy win against Vladislav Kovalev to stay in touch.

Caruana inflicted Firouzja's second consecutive loss in a very sharp battle in a King's Indian. Firouzja got the kind of game he enjoys but it was one pretty unforgiving of errors, after sacrificing a piece for a number of pawns, he eventually went wrong with 30...Kf8 and his position fell apart rather rapidly. Vladislav Kovalev is having a miserable tournament and was soon being asked some tricky questions by Magnus Carlsen, his 15...f5 seems to have been the losing move and Carlsen seemed to enjoy ripping his position apart. Jeffery Xiong beat Vladislav Artemiev in the final game to finish.

The remaining games were drawn. Yu Yangyi played a theoretically important game in the Scotch Four Knights, winning a pawn but it wasn't enough to win in the end against Wesley So. Jorden Van Foreest spotted an amazing drawing idea from a long way out (probably before playing 27.b4) where he sacrificed his Queen for perpetual check. Daniil Dubov had Anish Giri in quite serious trouble (8...Nxe7 seemed to be the culprit) but after losing some of the advantage he agreed a draw. Viswanathan Anand lost a pawn against Nikita Vitiugov for what seemed like very little compensation but only a few moves later the game was drawn by three fold repetition.

David Anton Guijarro beat long time leader Pavel Eljanov to lead himself alone on 7/10 half a point clear of Erwin L'Ami.
