The 3rd ACP World Rapid Cup organised by the Pivdenny Bank in Odessa, Ukraine took place 22nd-24th May 2009. Boris Gelfand took clear first place with a 3-1 victory over Peter Svidler in the final. Svidler however blew two winning positions in the final two games, losing both instead.
Peter Svidler defeated former World Champion Anatoly Karpov after a blitz playoff. Boris Gelfand advanced against Evgeniy Najer. Svidler and Gelfand advanced all the way to the final where Gelfand won 3-1. Photos © Boris Bukhman and the Official site: http://worldcup.pivdenny.com
The 3rd ACP World Rapid Cup organised by the Pivdenny Bank in Odessa, Ukraine took place 22nd-24th May 2009. Boris Gelfand took clear first place with a 3-1 victory over Peter Svidler in the final. Svidler however blew two winning positions in the final two games, losing both instead.
The venue was the Odessa National Academy of Law. AKO tournament with 16 participants. There were two-game matches at all stages, prior to the final. In the final there were four games. The time control is 20 minutes per game with an increment of 5 seconds per move. Tiebreak time rate: 3 min + 2 sec per move. If tiebreak ends 1-1, then Armageddon will be played: 5 min White, 4 min Black, White must win.
The prize fund is USD $57,000. The winner receives USD $10,000. There will be a special prize, named after the Odessa IM Mikhail Podgaets who passed away on 14 May 2009.
