The FIDE Grand Swiss (my game and results page is here) is being led by Iranian number one Parham Maghsoodloo. He is rated 37 in the world at 2692, so far he has beaten Chopra Aryan, David Anton, former countryman Alireza Firouzja and in round 5 he beat Richard Rapport, his only draw came in round 4 against Nodirbek Abdusattorov. Round 5 saw the top 5 boards all finish decisively.

Maghsoodloo leads with 4.5/5 half a point clear of 16 year old Abhimanyu Mishra, who beat Gukesh in Round 5, Marc'andria Maurizzi (beat Vincent Keymer), Arjun Erigaisi (beat Nikita Vitiugov) and Matthias Bluebaum (who beat Praggnanandhaa)

The event so far has been extremely hard fought with many long games, fatigue is bound to be a factor. The sixth round of eleven is today, followed by a rest day.

Parham Interview

Maghsoodloo gave an interesting interview with Charlize van Zyl after winning in Round 5. He admitted to looking forward to the break after round 6. Maghsoodloo stressed this was not the tournament to take risks in, there will come a moment when you have to take your chances but over pressing can easily lead to losses.

Charlize van Zyl said he'd looked relaxed around the hotel and was there with his wife, he didn't seem to be preparing all the time. Maghsoodloo confirmed it was very important to him to have his wife Sanaz Esmaili, and long term second IM Ahmad Asgarizadeh, sometimes in the past he had come to such events alone. He also said he prepared 5 hours for each game, a couple of hours in the evening and three hours before the game. He stressed that much of the hard research work was being done by his second.
