All of the games finished in a draw in the fifth round of the Sinquefield Cup This was the round heading into the only rest day. Levon Aronian and Alireza Firouzja drew a very sharp French but it seems it was all preparation from both players, Gukesh and Jan-Krzysztof Duda drew a fluctuating struggle where Duda in missed a clear win. Sam Sevian vs Nodirbek Abdusattorov, MVL vs Praggnanandhaa and Fabiano Caruana vs Wesley So were all well played draws.
Leaders Caruana 3pts, Praggnanandhaa and Aronian 2.5 pts.

Round 6 Pairings Sunday 24th August 2025: Abdusattorov-MVL, Gukesh-Firouzja, Praggnanandhaa-Duda, Sevian-Caruana, Aronian-So.
Round 5 Summary
Levon Aronian played a very sharp variation of the French Defence against Alireza Firouzja, although many of the side-lines were fascinating it's pretty clear both sides knew what was going on, Firouzja was the one needing a win in the Grand Chess Tour standings but he must have been disappointed that he set no real problems for Aronian in what for most normal players was an extremely sharp position.
Gukesh got something of an advantage against Jan-Krzysztof Duda in a 5 Bf4 Queen's Gambit but the position remained very double edged and difficult. 22...Qg4?! allowed equality and 23...Qf3? was losing as Duda's counterattack was lethal. It was Duda's turn to miss a chance when he didn't find the winning deflection 27.Bg2! and after some time trouble the players agreed a draw.
Sam Sevian and Nodirbek Abdusattorov drew a very accurately played Giuoco Piano. Fabiano Caruana tried to squeeze something out of a very drawish position but didn't get anywhere against Wesley So. MVL got nothing against Praggnanandhaa's Sicilian and the game was drawn by repetition in 26 moves.
