7th Staunton Memorial (9)

Timman wins the GM Group

Jan Timman emerged victorious in the Grandmaster all play all group that ran alongside the 7th Staunton Memorial Timman was too strong for most of his opponents.

Jan Timman emerged victorious in the Grandmaster all play all group that ran alongside the 7th Staunton Memorial Timman was too strong for most of his opponents but the true 'viktor' was Viktor Korchnoi whose presence ensured that there was standing room only on most days at Simpson's in the Strand. Korchnoi was the only player to defeat the winner and we will examine his performance tomorrow.

Thanks are due to Terry Chapman who supported the GM group and also played in it. Terry last played at Simpsons against Garry Kasparov in a match played at odds of two pawns and felled the great man in one of the games. Terry achieved quite a few good positions and had Korchnoi on the ropes but only won one game.

Timman wins rather effortlessly here as White never gets an attack to compensate for the pawns weakened on move 5.

1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 e6 3.Nc3 Bb4 4.f3 0-0 5.a3 Bxc3+ 6.bxc3 Ne8

(Otherwise White plays Bc1-g5 with the idea of e2-e4-e5 and Black cannot unpin. This move also give the option of playing f7-f5 to blunt the coming kingside attack and also Ne8-d6 attacking the weak pawn on c4)

7.e4 b6 8.Bd3 Ba6 9.Nh3 Nc6 10.0-0 Na5

(Commencing the usual play against the weak pawn on c4 but Timman's next move is a surprise)

11.Qe2 Nb3

(11...c5 intending Rc8 is a standard idea but this deprives White of the bishop pair)

12.Rb1 Nxc1 13.Rbxc1 Qe7 14.e5 Bb7

(14...Qxa3 15.Qe4 g6 16.Qxa8)

15. f4 f5 16.exf6 Nxf6 17.Qc2 c5

(White has no attack or space to compensate for his weak pawns)

18.d5!? exd5 19.Rce1 Qd6 20.Re5 d4 21.Rd1 h6 22.cxd4 Ng4 23.Bh7+ Kh8 24.dxc5 Qc7 25.c6

(25.cxb6 axb6 and the rook on e5 is attack and cannot cover e3 and c5)

25...Bxc6 26.Re2 Bb7 27.Be4 Qc5+ 28.Kh1 Bxe4 29.Qxe4 Nf6 30.Qd3 Rae8 31.Nf2 Rxe2 32.Qxe2 Re8 33.Qc2 d5 0-1

Position after 33...d5

White's resignation may appear premature but his pieces are passively placed and he is losing at least one pawn and probably two for example 34.Nd3 Qxc4 35.Qf2 Qb3 36.Qf3 Qxa3.

Final scores.
