IM Malcolm Pein talks about the centenary exhibition in London which he helped to organise.
On Saturday afternoon a 100 board simultaneous was staged at the RAC Club in Pall Mall to celebrate the centenary of the RAC Chess Circle. Ten of England's most finest grandmasters played three teams of ten players each in the delightful setting of the Mountbatten Room.
Teams were from drawn from the RAC Club membership and other London clubs who play in the Hamilton-Russell Cup. There were also two junior teams. The first was composed of members of the England Junior Squad and the second drawn from children who participate in the Chess in Schools and Communities scheme, a charity in which your correspondent is involved. The CSC children came from Ravenscroft School in Newham and William Patten School in Hackney.
The Grandmasters scored heavily, as one might expect. Each round lasted just an hour and with only ten boards, the amateurs had to move faster than in an ordinary simultaneous. Nevertheless there were some notable wins and performances.
For the England juniors, Matthew Wadsworth from Swindon scored 2/3. He defeated the British champion Michael Adams and drew with Gawain Jones and David Howell while Isaac Sanders of Highgate School in north London defeated David Howell with a nice tactic and then good technique. Today I will give Wadsworth's win and tomorrow Sanders'.
The GMs played five games with white and five with black each round.

(Solid play so far but this is a fatal error. How did White win material?)

A number of parents stood in for absentees and did very well. Jim Wadsworth, father of Matthew, scored 50% and Hans Hansen, father of William Claridge-Hansen, survived a difficult position against Simon Williams and won with a nice combination, see if you can find it.
