Polgar - Kaidanov Sicilian Theme Match 2010 (1)

Polgar - Kaidanov Sicilian Theme Match Game 1

Judit Polgar and Gregory Kaidanov played a four game Sicilian Themed Match. Malcolm Pein looks at Game 1.

This week we will examine the entertaining exhibition match sponsored by chess fan Jeff Smith in his home town of Hilton Head in Carolina USA. Judit Polgar of Hungary played four games against former Russian GM Gregory Kaidanov, now of Lexington Kentucky, all with the Sicilian Defence. The following variations were selected; Sveshnikov, Dragon, Najdorf and Scheveningen. White won every game and the match was drawn 2-2.

Here is game one, a Sicilian Sveshnikov where Black has to prove that bishops and open files compensate for structural weaknesses. White sacrifices a piece to halt Black's counterplay but does not wholly succeed until an error in calculation decides.
