British Championships 2010 (4)

Michael Adams beats Jack Rudd in Round 4

Malcolm Pein looks at Michael Adams' convincing win against Jack Rudd in Round 4 of the British Championships.

Michael Adams ended Jack Rudd's fine run with more impressive play as he assumed the sole lead of the British Championships at the University of Kent in Canterbury. The England number one moved to 4/4 after reducing his opponent to complete helplessness after just 17 moves. Adams' 23rd and final move did not do anything, but the task of finding a reply provoked Rudd's resignation.

Adams is a class above the rest of the field but often, leading players find this kind of situation awkward as potentially, they can lose a lot of rating points. Adams seems to be making light of his task although he has yet to face some of the other Grandmasters in the field.

Leading scores: 1 Adams 4/4

2-3 Slavin, A Hunt 3.5

4-13 Littlewood, Houska, Constantinou, S Williams, N Pert, Hawkins, Conquest Rudd, Rendle, Gomally 3
