Chess is at the centre of this year's London Design Festival with a tournament to be played in Trafalgar Square on a gigantic chess set with two meter high ceramic chess pieces created by Spanish designer Jaime Hayón.

The pieces rest on a specially created mosaic glass chess board and the installation will be in place between the two fountains in Trafalgar Square, from Saturday 19th to Wednesday 23rd September. Even if you do not want to play it will be coming along to see this magnificent creation.

The pieces have been handcrafted by Hayón and many reference iconic buildings in London and their domes, towers and spires. Elements of London's history will be encoded on the pieces and each piece has been hand-painted by the creator.

To enter the tournament go the English Chess Federation website.

International Master Vyacheslav Osnos has passed away at the age of 74. He was another of a generation of Soviet players who were comfortably of Grandmaster strength but not sufficiently strong to secure many opportunities for foreign travel. He qualified for the Soviet Championships from 1963-1968 and twice won the Leningrad championship. He worked as a trainer for Viktor Korchnoi when the latter was playing in the World Championship cycle in the 1970s. I recall that shortly after Russians were allowed to travel freely Osnos went to play an event in Finland and won it with 11/11.
