Michael Adams is well on the way to winning the British Championships but Adams Hunt held him in Round 9 to score a GM norm. Malcolm Pein reports.
International Master Adam Hunt completed what must surely be a nine round grandmaster result as he held England number one Michael Adams to a draw at the British Chess Championships. Hunt remains unbeaten, only he and GM Nick Pert have avoided defeat at Adams' hands.
Hunt has faced six GMs and 2 IMs and his tournament rating performance is well over 2600. He has a positive score against GMs having defeated Peter Wells and drawn with Adams, Stuart Conquest, Nick Pert, Danny Gormally and Simon Williams.
Stephen Gordon bounced back from his defeat by Michael Adams with two wins and he faces Adam Hunt in round ten. Simon Williams recovered from a poor opening position and outplayed Stuart Conuest who ran too short of time to formulate a plan and was crushed by an advance of Williams' central pawns. Williams' reward is Adams in round 10.
Williams has just brought out the first of two DVDs on the French Defence entitled 'The Fighting French'. His first production on the Dutch Defence was very well received. I hope he does not recommend 8...Nh4, Black seems to be struggling but he certainly comes out fighting.
