Mark Crowther - Tuesday 29th June 2010
FIDE President Kirsan Ilyumzhinov and former World Chess Champion are the only two to meet the dead-line of 29th June 2010 (three months before the elections) to become FIDE President. Both lists will be now be examined for their validity and they will be ratified during its Presidential Board meeting in Tromso, 24-25 July. Also there has been a resolution to the conflict within the Russian Chess Federation, a complete victory for Dvorkovich.
In an article on the FIDE website it has been confirmed that the following tickets have been submitted to the Presidential Board for the elections in November.

Elsewhere Iluymzhinov claims he has 55 nations in support of him already which leaves around 25-30 to go to win the election. Whether these figures are real will only be seen at election time. Ilyumzhinov has promised money for 10 years of Campomanes Memorial events in Asia and similar events in the Americas.
The Presidential Board meeting in Tromso in July potentially has significance because, in my reading of the regulations, that Karpov will require at least some magnanimity in order to stand as he doesn't have the support of the Russian Federation, his own.
This is because now the Russian Chess Federation is completely in the hands of Arkadij Dvorkovich. In what looks like quite a rough take over by effectively the Russian Government.
I highly doubt that Ilyumzhinov's initial nomination by Russia was legal, but now all this has been cleared up effectively with Alexander Bakh's resignation at a meeting on the 28th in Moscow. The minutes were published on the Russian Chess Federation site in what looks like (if you read between the lines even not so much) go quietly or you'll really regret it kind of ultimatum to him.
I think it is clear that only Bakh had the powers to nominate earlier but now these have been handed over to Dvorkovich. The minutes pretty much make it clear that Bakh wasn't there at the meeting. The significance as to who benefits for this will only become clear later but all this makes a mockery of the Russian President's plan of stopping Government interference in the decisions of sporting organisations.
