The top of the FIDE Rating list is at its most volatile for a number of years. With many events involving the elite players recently any of the top 3 could have emerged top. As it is Viswanathan Anand is top after poor performances from Magnus Carlsen at the Olympiad and the start of Bilbao. However Carlsen already has a great performance in the Pearl Spring tournament which would have taken him back to the top if included. I can't be the only one who doesn't like to see a list out of date at the moment of publication. Levon Aronian's fine Olympiad and European Club Cup would have taken him top had he just got a couple of better results.
