The US Chess Championships took place in Saint Louis 8th-19th May 2012 (play-off, if required 20th). Hikaru Nakamura returned after missing last year. Nakamura regained the title after defeating defending champion Gata Kamsky in the penultimate round with black. Irina Krush won back her title from Anna Zatonskih after a rather strange rapid playoff.
Pre-Tourney Favorites Pull Ahead at U.S. Championships (3)
Defending Champion Gata Kamsky and top seed Hikaru Nakamura both won. Hikaru Nakamura was over an hour ahead of Ray Robson in the Dragon. Robson was down to 7 minutes after about 26 moves and Nakamura was an hour ahead on the clock. Needless to say he didn't survive. (Nakamura was an hour ahead and still playing very fast in an unclear position, it worked today but not in round 2 where he had plenty of time to find 35...Kh7 which turns out to win, so maybe Nakamura plays too fast, especially in winning positions, but it is certain Robson plays too slowly). Gata Kamsky ground down Alexander Onischuk in a London System for only his second ever win against him. It looks certain that Nakamura and Kamsky will fight it out for the title. Also already it looks to like Anna Zatonskih and Irina Krush will do so in the women's section sharing the lead on 2.5/3 along with Iryna Zenyuk.
