Shakhriyar Mamedyarov beat a struggling Fabiano Caruana with the black pieces in round 7 of the Superbet Classic, this was his third straight win and due to the defeat of Alexander Grischuk it meant that he holds a one point lead with only a couple of rounds to go.
Mamedyarov was rewarded for his enterprising play with a win with the black pieces against Fabiano Caruana. Mamedyarov's 9...g5 was risky and could have left him with a big disadvantage after 10.Nd5! and if Bd7 11.Bxg5! but neither he nor Caruana found this over the board. Caruana was faced with all sorts of tactics, not something he can have been happy about 18...Bd8 likely came as a surprise and Mamedyarov brought home the full point. This was Mamedyarov's third win in a row and gave him a one point lead going into the final two rounds.
Joint leader Alexander Grischuk lost to Levon Aronian, Grischuk's 14...Re8 was a novelty, Aronian was pleased with his 15.Qd2 in reply although the computer thinks he can grab the exchange on e8 with 15.Nc7. Aronian broke open black's kingside structure with 20.Nxf6 and after 21...Nd4? (21...Ne5 or 21...Re7 are about equal) and 23...Bc5? (the final error 23...Be5 had to be tried) Aronian had a decisive attack.
Anish Giri won a Symmetrical English against Maxime Vachier-Lagrave. Although there were bishops of opposite colours MVL could not save the endgame.
Radjabov-So was a sharp Vienna variation of the Queen's Gambit where lively play resulted in exchanges and a totally drawn bishops of opposite colours endgame. Constantin Lupulescu and Bogdan-Daniel Deac fought down to King vs King in the final game to finish.
Round 7 Standings: 1st Mamedyarov 5pts, 2nd Grischuk 4pts, 3rd So 4pts, 4th Deac 3.5pts, 4th Aronian 3.5pts, 6th Giri 3.5pts, 7th Radjabov 3.5pts, 8th Caruana 3pts, 9th Lupulescu 2.5pts, 10th MVL 2.5pts.
