Shakhriyar Mamedyarov only needs a draw in the final round against Maxime Vachier-Lagrave to win the Superbet Chess Classic tournament. Mamedyarov drew against Anish Giri using the moves of the game Radjabov vs MVL from earlier in the event.

The only decisive game was Levon Aronian grinding out a win with black against Bogdan-Daniel Deac. 18...Rd7?! 19.Be3 might have been a different matter for Deac. Wesley So drew with Maxime Vachier-Lagrave in a game mainly notable for the six consecutive knight moves played by black, 5...Nb4, 6... Nd3+ 7... Nf4+ 8... Ne6 9... Nd4 10... Ndc6N only the final move being new however, still it's a very striking journey for a piece to make. Teimour Radjabov was significantly better out of the opening against Constantin Lupulescu in a Sicilian Richter Rauser, computers like 23.Nc4 a lot. By the time of 27.Qe2 h4 the worst was over for black and the game was eventually drawn. It's clear this isn't Fabiano Caruana's tournament, probably a significant hangover from a disappointing Candidates, today he botched an almost winning position against Alexander Grischuk, 21....Na4! instead of 21...Nc4 being one significant improvement, later Grischuk was placed much better but the game eventually ended in a draw.

Round 8 Standings: 1st Mamedyarov 5.5pts, 2nd Aronian 4.5pts, 3rd So 4.5pts, 4th Grischuk 4.5pts, 5th Giri 4pts, 6th Radjabov 4pts, 7th Deac 3.5pts, 8th Caruana 3.5pts, 9th Lupulescu 3pts and 10th MVL 3pts.

Round 9 Pairings 1pm Monday 14th June: Lupulescu-So, Aronian-Radjabov, Caruana-Deac, Giri-Grischuk, MVL-Mamedyarov.
