Anish Giri took the sole lead of the Skilling Open Preliminary Group after the first day of play. This is the first event of the Champions Chess Tour which is an online league hosted by Chess24 that builds on the Magnus Carlsen Tour earlier in the year and will take about another year to complete. The preliminary group is a 15 round all-play-all held over 3 days and the top 8 of 16 will advance to the knockout phase which will be contested using a mini-match format of two sets followed by a tie-break if necessary. Each round of these matches will take place over two days, not the three days used in earlier online tournaments.

The leader Giri drew against Maxime Vachier-Lagrave and Hikaru Nakamura in rounds 1 and 3 and beat Sergey Karjakin, Le Quang Liem and Santosh Gujrathi Vidit in the final game of the day to finish. Giri plays World Champion Magnus Carlsen tomorrow.

Carlsen and David Anton are half a point behind Giri. Carlsen had a shocking loss in round one when on the verge of beating Ian Nepomniachtchi he had a mouse slip and dropped his Queen, a draw against MVL in round 2 was followed by wins against Radjabov, Anton and Alireza Firouzja. Anton apart from his loss to Carlsen drew with Wesley So and beat Peter Svidler, Ian Nepomniachtchi and Teimour Radjabov.

In the group just behind are So, Nepomniachtchi, Nakamura and Aronian.

Round 5 (of 15) Standings: 1st Giri 4pts, 2nd=  Carlsen, Anton 3.5pts, 4th=  So,  Nepomniachtchi, Aronian, Nakamura 3pts, 8th=  Firouzja, Ding 2.5pts, 10th=  Duda, Le, Svidler, MVL 2pts, 14th=  Radjabov, Vidit 1.5pts, 16th  Karjakin 1pt.
