3rd Pearl Spring Tournament 2010 (5)

Carlsen and Bacrot win easy points in Round 5

Magnus Carlsen moved to 4/5 at the half way stage of the Pearl Spring Tournament. He defeated a subdued Veselin Topalov in just 32 moves. Etienne Bacrot was donated a piece by Wang Yue and brought home the full point easily. Viswanathan Anand and Vugar Gashimov drew by repetition after only 25 moves.

Today's play gave the impression that many of the players are ready for the rest day. Viswanathan Anand took a quick draw with white against Vugar Gashimov after yesterday's vexing defeat.

Magnus Carlsen won again to move to 4/5 at the half way stage and some kind of repetition of the domination of last year. That said he didn't have to do all that much. Topalov got a solid but passive position with his Closed Ruy Lopez and showed no signs of comfort at any point. He tried to inject some dynamism for himself into the game but it was completely against the spirit of his position and Magnus Carlsen took the full point very easily. Topalov seems badly out of form at the moment.

Like Carlsen, it is hard to judge just how well 2nd placed Etienne Bacrot is playing when his opponents insist on making such bad moves. Yesterday he was donated an extra half point by Anand, today Wang Yue seemed to just lose his mind on move 30 and lost a piece.
