Wins for Ding Liren over Ian Nepomniachtchi and Fabiano Caruana over Hikaru Nakamura (following an Armageddon final decisive game) has pretty much decided the four final phase qualifiers with two rounds of games to go. Nakamura, Carlsen and Ding Liren have 11 points and Caruana 10 points, MVL and Nepomniachtchi are both on 5 points with only mathematical chances of making the final.

Ding Liren held Nepomniachtchi to a draw in the first game of their match. Game 2 saw the big downside to Nepomniachtchi's fast play, his 23...g5 just lost material (23...Rac8 was perhaps a bit better for him) and there was no way back after 24.Nc7. Game 3 was a catastrophe for Ding, in a Ruy Lopez Berlin things started to go wrong with 16...Re6 and then with 21...Qd7? and 22...Rxf5? he dropped huge quantities of material. Ding won the match by winning the final game, Nepomniachtchi was a pawn down but with an equal position according to the computer but he played the losing 29...Rd2? (Rbd8 or Rf8 both held) with very little thought and Ding brought home the full point quite easily.

Fabiano Caruana beat Hikaru Nakamura in an Armageddon game after a very interesting match. Nakamura played the same system against the Bf4 Queen's Gambit he's played throughout the event. In both games Caruana chose the practically untried 8.h4 winning the first game after a long grind and drawing the third. Caruana was doing fine in game 2 but drifted into a lost knight endgame. Caruana drew game four quite easily with black. The Armageddon game was also a Queen's Gambit with Bf4. Nakamura achieved equality out of the opening but drifted into trouble after 27...Qa3 giving up his own centre and Caruana played really nicely to push his d-pawn to the seventh rank and win.

Round 5 (of 7) Standings: Nakamura, Carlsen, Ding 11pts, Caruana 10pts, MVL, Nepomniachtchi 5pts, Giri 4pts, Firouzja 3pts.
