The last day of the preliminary section saw all four matches being played and it decided the pairings for the semi-finals of the Final 4 and the prize money for places 5-8. Nakamura-Caruana will be on Friday and Ding-Carlsen on Saturday ahead of the final on Sunday.

Magnus Carlsen lost 3-1 to Ding Liren where he played pretty shoddy chess. Carlsen chose some rather suspect openings, and even when he rather got away with them he then blundered seriously almost straight away, the one bright spot was his win in game 2. Had Carlsen won the match he would have faced Ding Liren in the semi-finals, as the results went this was still the pairing.

Hikaru Nakamura beat Maxime Vachier-Lagrave in an Armageddon tie-break to secure first place, the end of that game saw MVL leave his rook en prise for two moves, only on the second move did Nakamura see it. Nakamura also missed a one move win with 14.Bxf7 in game four that would have ended the match immediately.

Anish Giri saved the best until last rushing to a 2.5-0.5 lead against Fabiano Caruana before losing the final game. Ian Nepomniachtchi beat Alireza Firouzja in probably the best Armageddon game so far (not a very competitive list it has to be said). Alireza was doing fine for most of the game as black where he needed a draw the key moment came with the sequence 38... Qf2 (38... Qf4! draws quite easily) 39. Qg5+ Ke6 (39... Kd7 forced is equal but the game also goes on. 40. Qc1! wins.

I believe ties were resolved by the match score between the tied players.

Final standings: 1st Nakamura 15pts, 2nd Ding 15pts, 3rd Carlsen 13pts, 4th Caruana 13pts, 5th Nepomniachtchi 8pts, 6th Firouzja 7pts, 7th Giri 7pts, 8th MVL 6pts.

The final four matches will be over 4 rapid games, if tied two pairs of blitz games will be played to try and resolve the match before a final single decisive Armageddon game.
