GCT Rapid and Blitz YourNextMove 2016 (10-18 Blitz)

Carlsen races to YourNextMove tournament win

Magnus Carlsen started with a very impressive 5/6 on the final day of the YourNextMove tournament in Leuven, Belgium. This run was enough to secure tournament victory with three rounds to spare. This performance along with his 4/4 on day two of the rapids took him to the win. Carlsen had winning chances even in the two draws he had in the first 6 games but after securing tournament victory he played very wildly to lose to Anish Giri and then drew his final games.

Wesley So followed a conservative policy of trying to avoid losses and picking up wins where he could and this took him to clear second place. Levon Aronian finished in third and Viswanathan Anand fourth. Paris winner Hikaru Nakamura performed well below his best and only finished 7th.

Day 2 blitz scores: Carlsen 6/9, Giri, Anand, Caruana 5pts, Aronian, So, MVL and Nakamura 4.5pts Kramnik 4pts and Topalov 2pts.

Final blitz standings: Carlsen 11pts/18, Aronian 10pts, Anand, Nakamura, So 9.5pts, Kramnik, MVL 9pts, Caruana 8.5pts, Giri 8pts, Topalov 6pts.

Final combined results: Carlsen 23pts, Wesley So 20.5pts, Aronian 20pts, Anand 19.5pts, Caruana 17.5pts, MVL 17pts, Nakamura 16.5, Kramnik, Giri 16pts, Topalov 14pts.

The remaining events on this year's Grand Chess Tour are the 4th Sinquefield Cup 4th to 16th August 2016 and the 8th London Chess Classic 7th to 19th December 2016. Magnus Carlsen leads the Grand Chess Tour with 23 points ahead of Nakamura and So on 17pts but will miss at least the Sinquefield Cup if not both of these later events.
