GCT Rapid and Blitz YourNextMove 2016 (6-9)

Carlsen perfect on day two to win the YourNextMove Rapid

Magnus Carlsen showed why they pay him the big bucks by coming back from a disappointing finish to his first day with a perfect 4/4 performance on the second. In a closely bunched field this proved to be enough to win the rapid section in the YourNext Move Rapid section Leuven. Carlsen beat Veselin Topalov, Anish Giri, Viswanathan Anand and finally Vladimir Kramnik in his winning run.

Carlsen will take a one point lead over Wesley So (undefeated) and two points over Anand and Aronian and a massive 5 points over Nakamura into the two day blitz event that takes place on Sunday and Monday as points in the rapid count double that of the blitz. However with 18 games to come there are still more than enough points available for most of the players.

Paris winner Hikaru Nakamura couldn't make up for his poor showing on day one, only reaching 2/4 on day two with a grinding marathon victory over Fabiano Caruana in the final round. Vladimir Kramnik had another poor day too scoring just 1.5/4 but did have the satisfaction of a nice endgame win against Anand.

Final Rapidplay Standings (points will double up in the final standings when combined with the blitz): Carlsen 6pts/9, So 5.5pts, Anand, Aronian 5pts, MLV, Giri, Topalov 4pts Nakamura, Kramnik 3.5pts.
