Anand leads the YourNextMove Rapid in a day of surprises

Viswanathan Anand finished the first day of the YourNextMove Rapid tournament undefeated and leading with 3.5/5 half a point clear of Fabiano Caruana and the also undefeated Wesley So.

Anand started the day with a bang, sacrificing a piece for a far from obvious winning attack against Maxime Vachier-Lagrave (MVL). Anand seemed to find the combination rather easy judging from his comments afterwards. Anand himself fell into a combination which lost a piece against Caruana in Round 3 but escaped with a draw. Anand's other win of the day was in the final round 5 against Veselin Topalov.

What of the favourtes? The Paris winner Hikaru Nakamura started with three losses before making sure of a solid draw in round 4 against Anand. Magnus Carlsen (2nd in Paris) was playing alright, although he seemed to be trying a little too hard and had a number of difficult games on the way to a +1 score, thanks to an endgame win against Aronian. Then the wheels came off for him in just a few minutes. Carlsen fought his way to a winning position against Caruana before falling to a devilish combination that lost him the game. Then within a few minutes Carlsen had an aberration and just dropped a piece to a grateful Nakamura.

Day 1 standings (points will count double those of the blitz in the final standings): 1st Anand 3.5pts, 2nd-3rd Caruana, So, 4th-7th Aronian, MVL, Giri, Topalov, 8th-9th Carlsen, Kramnik, 10th Nakamura.
