Grand Chess Tour Paris 2016 (Blitz 1-9)
Carlsen closes in on Nakamura after day 1 of the GCT Paris blitz
Mark Crowther - Saturday 11th June 2016
Hikaru Nakamura took a one point lead over Magnus Carlsen from the rapid into the blitz section of the Grand Chess Tour Paris tournament but this was cut in half by the end of the first day.
Nakamura had led the blitz element of the event all day and in the final round game against Carlsen he got a large, probably winning advantage. Carlsen realed off his early moves but 17...Qd5? was a mistake and after 18.Bf1! Carlsen thought for a long time how to even continue. Nakamura built up a winning advantage but it started to reduce after 34.g4 and Carlsen later turned down a draw offer. Carlsen got a winning position when his king penetrated Nakamura's position but even then allowed Nakamura chances to escape before winning. All to play for on the final day.
Final 9 rounds of blitz are on Sunday.
Nakamura had a slice of luck when he claimed a win after Topalov failed to promote his pawn properly leaving it on the promotion square instead of replacing it with a queen. Nakamura claimed the game after Topalov pressed the clock as the rules entitle him to do.
Nakamura beat Caruana, Giri, Topalov, Fressinet and So losing to Carlsen and drawing the rest.
Carlsen beat Aronian, Kramnik, Giri, Fressinet and Nakamura and drew the rest.
These two players are so far in front of the rest of the field in the over all standings the battle will be between them on the final day.
