Freestyle Grand Slam Weissenhaus 2025
Mark Crowther - Friday 7th February 2025
The Freestyle Grand Slam Weissenhaus is the first in a series of rebranded Chess960 (Hans-Walter Schmitt organised a series of events in Germany and coined this name) events trying to popularise a format espoused by Bobby Fischer in 1993 and launched by him in Argentina in 1996, the idea itself is very old going back to at least the 18th Century. The format has never found favour amongst regular players because it seeks to solve problems they don't really have, an exhaustion of opening choices, unwillingness to spend massive amounts of time preparing openings and boredom with the original game. Most players like having openings they can start the game with and the regular opening position is clearly the best and most aesthetic of the 960 possible arrangements (to purloin a phrase "best by test"). Even though the series is backed by a lot of money it faces an uphill struggle to find an audience because previous attempts have clearly failed, but this is likely the last, but best, chance of success. The first event of the series takes place in Wangels, Germany 7th to 14th February 2025. Players: Carlsen, Caruana, Nakamura, Gukesh, Abdusattorov, Firouzja, Aronian, Keymer, Fedoseev and Sindarov. A rapid round robin is followed by a classical KO later stage. I don't have the ability to display this chess variant, I will be able to provide daily updates of the PGN, most likely I'll actually do that live.
