The World Women's Chess Champion Hou Yifan got off to the best possible start in the 1st FIDE Women's Grand Prix of 2011-12 when she beat Humpy Koneru in the first round of the Rostov FIDE Women's Grand Prix. She defends her title against Koneru later in the year and the two are the top seeds in this event. Kateryna Lahno beat Alisa Galliamova in the only other decisive game of the day. Brief report follows.

Appropriately enough the first Women's Grand Prix of the 2011-12 season started with a game between the two favourites, World Chess Champion Hou Yifan and her challenger Humpy Koneru. Koneru was pressing for much of the game before blundering decisively on move 36 after which there was no way back.
