Fabiano Caruana and Sergey Karjakin drew their round 8 game and share the lead of the Tashkent FIDE Grand Prix on 5/8 going into what was clearly a badly needed second rest day for the players. Caruana-Karjakin was a well played but not terribly thrilling Open Catalan. The only decisive game of the day saw Gata Kamsky play a rather lame variation of the Rubinstein Nimzo-Indian and was gradually outplayed by Peter Leko. (Kamsky thought that his 13.b4 was almost the decisive mistake and it took him some time to realise this) Mamedyarov-Ponomariov was an interesting topical variation of the QGA. Gelfand-Dominguez, Svidler-Kasimdzhanov and Morozevich-Wang were all drawn. Round 9 Sunday.
