FIDE Candidates Tournaments 2026
Mark Crowther - Sunday 29th March 2026
The FIDE Candidates Tournaments both open and women's events take place in the Cap St Georges resort, Cyprus, Sun 29th Mar to Thu 16th Apr 2026. I would argue that this is the highlight of the entire FIDE World Championship cycle. The poor form of the current champion Gukesh has to be a major motivating factor for anyone in the open event. The event is on the periphery of the current Iran conflict and Humpy Koneru decided that she would not participate in the women's event due to the perceived danger and was at the last minute replaced by Anna Muzychuk.
Players open: Hikaru Nakamura, Fabiano Caruana, Anish Giri, R Praggnanandhaa, Javokhir Sindarov, Andrey Esipenko, Matthias Bluebaum and Wei Yi.
Players: women: Tan Zhongyi, Anna Muzychuk, Bibisara Assaubayeva, Aleksandra Goryachkina, Kateryna Lagno, Deshmukh Divya, Rameshbabu Vaishali and Zhu Jiner.

Vaishali wins the Women's Candidates Tournament
Mark Crowther | Wed Apr 15 22:43:00 2026
Rameshbabu Vaishali won the FIDE Women's Candidates tournament after beating Kateryna Lagno in the final round. Praggnanandhaa's elder sister will play Ju Wenjun for the title later in the year. Sindarov forced a quick draw in the final round to finish on +6 undefeated. Giri finished second after beating Bluebaum, Caruana finished 3rd after beating Esipenko. Strange statistic, there were no Ruy Lopez variations played in the open section.

FIDE Candidates Tournament 2026 (12)
Mark Crowther | Mon Apr 13 00:38:00 2026
Sindarov took a quick draw against Nakamura to lie dormie 2 going into the final two rounds. Anish Giri has to beat him in Round 13 after failing to convert a winning advantage against Wei Yi. Jiner Zhu beat Rameshbabu Vaishali to join her in the lead of the Women's Candidates. Bibisara and Muzychuk are also in contention half a point behind.
FIDE Candidates Tournament 2026 (11)
Mark Crowther | Sat Apr 11 23:58:00 2026
Sindarov was forced to work hard for a draw by Caruana, he leads Giri by two points with just three rounds to go. Rameshbabu Vaishali is in poll position in the Women's Candidates with a 1 point lead following a win against Goryachkina who blundered a rook.
FIDE Candidates Tournament 2026 (10)
Sindarov almost home and dry in the FIDE Candidates with four rounds to go
Mark Crowther | Fri Apr 10 00:09:00 2026
Sindarov looked frighteningly strong today as he set Praggnanandhaa problems he couldn't handle in a variation he himself chose, the distant chasers Anish Giri and Fabiano Caruana both drew. The women's event is led by Vaishali who drew with Anna Muzychuk, six of the eight players could still realistically win this event.
FIDE Candidates Tournament 2026 (9)
Sindarov misses a big opportunity and Giri beats Caruana in Candidates Round 9
Mark Crowther | Wed Apr 8 20:11:00 2026
Sindarov missed a golden chance to win against against Bluebaum and only drew. Fabiano Caruana's chances ended with defeat by Anish Giri. Giri is surely the only player who can stop Sindarov. Zhu Jiner and Vaishali lead the women's event.
FIDE Candidates Tournament 2026 (8)
Sindarov extends his lead to two points in the Candidates even after a draw in Round 8
Mark Crowther | Wed Apr 8 01:45:00 2026
Sindarov's draw with black against Esipenko was enough for him to extend his lead after Nakamura beat Caruana. In the women's event there is a five way tie for first after Anna Muzychuk messed up a winning position and event went on to lose against Deshmukh Divya.
FIDE Candidates Tournament 2026 (7)
Javokhir Sindarov leads the FIDE Candidates by 1.5 points at the half way stage
Mark Crowther | Sun Apr 5 22:37:00 2026
Sindarov was held to a draw in Round 7 by Anish Giri. He leads Fabiano Caruana by 1.5 points at the half way stage of the Candidates. His closest rival Fabiano Caruana drew against Preggnanandhaa. Wei Yi scored the only win of the round against Esipenko. In the women's event Anna Muzychuk, leads by half a point with 4.5/7. Vaishali Rameshbabu is on 4 points after her second consecutive win in a game where she stood lost.
FIDE Candidates Tournament 2026 (6)
Sindarov in danger of running away with the Candidates after he moves to 5.5/6
Mark Crowther | Sun Apr 5 02:23:00 2026
Javokhir Sindarov beat Wei Yi to move to 5.5/6 giving him a point and a half lead over Fabiano Caruana. In the women's event, the last minute replacement for Humpy Koneru, Anna Muzychuk, leads with 4/7.
FIDE Candidates Tournament 2026 (5)
Sindarov and Caruana both win in Candidates Round 5
Mark Crowther | Fri Apr 3 23:07:00 2026
Javokhir Sindarov crushed Hikaru Nakamura with the black pieces to move to 4.5/5. Nakamura's high risk attitude in this game was shown to be rather naive. Fabiano Caruana resumed winning ways by beating Bluebaum. Anna Muzychuk, Kateryna Lagno and Jiner Zhu lead the women's with 3/5, it's very close with those tied for last place on 2/5.
FIDE Candidates Tournament 2026 (3-4)
Sindarov takes an early lead in the Candidates after beating Caruana in Round 4
Mark Crowther | Thu Apr 2 21:00:00 2026
Sindarov has a one point lead over Caruana after beating him in Round 4 of the FIDE Candidates, in Round 3 he had won a fine game against Praggnanandhaa. The women's event is considerably closer with Assaubayeva and Anna Muzychuk leading on 2.5/4.
FIDE Candidates Tournament 2026 (2)

Mark Crowther | Mon Mar 30 22:37:00 2026
Sindarov-Bluebaum, Wei Yi-Praggnanandhaa, Giri-Caruana and Esipenko-Nakamura were all drawn. No serious chances were missed. In the women's event Zhu Jiner missed two winning chances against Lagno, Divya was winning against Vaishali only to allow a miracle escape.
FIDE Candidates Tournament 2026 (1)
FIDE Candidates tournament in Cyprus starts with three decisive games
Mark Crowther | Sun Mar 29 22:09:00 2026
Sindarov, Praggnanandhaa and Caruana were all winners in the first round of the Candidates. These three were many people's favorites before the event started. The women's event started with four draws but Goryachkina really ought to have beaten Lagno.
