Dortmund Sparkassen Chess Meeting 2013 (5)

Kramnik and Adams continue to win in Dortmund Round 5

Vladimir Kramnik and Michael Adams share the lead with 4/5 in Dortmund going into the rest day.

Kramnik took a lot of risks against Peter Leko and was eventually rewarded with a win when Leko's resistance weakened in time pressure. 22.Nde4 was an interesting sacrifice which it looks like Leko could have accepted, 28...Rbc8 might have been better, the position remained equal until 33...Qxa6?! (33...Qc5 is level) by move 40 Kramnik was a pawn up for no compensation and won the game.

Wang Hao has been suffering from severe ear pain but has still been scoring points. He was equal out of the opening but 25...Be7 (25...Bc2) was a mis-step and then 30...Bg4?? just dropped a piece to 31.e5 hitting both bishops.

Dmitry Andreikin has had a miserable event so far but the gloom lifted somewhat when he got the opportunity to play a lovely tactic against Igor Khenkin. Black had sufficient counterplay on move 19 with 18...Rc8 but didn't see any reason why he couldn't play 19...Nxe5 20. Nxe5 Qxe5 21.Ng6!! there was no way to avoid losing the exchange at least. Khenkin later very unusually for a GM blundered a mate too.

Daniel Fridman drew against Georg Meier in a lengthy English Symmetrical Variation. Fabiano Caruana and Arkadij Naiditsch drew a complex queenless middlegame come ending in Scotch Four Knights.

Round 5 Standings: Kramnik, Adams 4pts, Meier, Naiditsch, Wang Hao 2.5pts, Fridman, Khenkin, Leko, Caruana 2pts, Andreikin 1.5pts.

Round 6 Pairings following rest day Wednesday. Thu 1st Aug 2pm: Leko-Wang, Naiditsch-Adams, Khenkin-Caruana, Meier-Andreikin, Kramnik-Fridman.
