The 88th Tata Steel Chess tournament took place in Wijk aan Zee Fri 16th Jan to Sun 1st Feb 2026. Players: Masters: Yagiz Kaan Erdogmus, Aravindh Chithambaram, Hans Niemann, Vincent Keymer, Javokhir Sindarov, Jorden van Foreest, Arjun Erigaisi, Praggnanandhaa Rameshbabu, Van Nguyen Thai Dai, Gukesh Dommaraju, Anish Giri, Vladimir Fedoseev, Matthias Bluebaum and Nodirbek Abdusattorov.
Challengers: Vasyl Ivanchuk, Marc Andria Maurizzi, Velimir Ivic, Erwin l'Ami, Bibisara Assaubayeva, Eline Roebers, Miaoyi Lu, Max Warmerdam, Panesar Vedant, Andy Woodward, Aydin Suleymanli, Faustino Oro, Daniil Yuffa and Carissa Yip.
Nodirbek Abdusattorov won the Masters, Andy Woodward the Challengers and the top Amateur group was won by Christian Gloeckler. Woodward will play in the Masters next year and Gloeckler the Challengers.

Abdusattorov beats Erigaisi to win the Tata Steel Masters

Nodirbek Abdusattorov has been there and there abouts in the battle for first place in Tata Steel Masters for a few years now. This year it all came together for him and he won with 9 points from 13, half a point clear of his fellow Uzbek, Javokhir Sindarov. Local player Jorden van Foreest finished in 3rd on tie-break from Hans Moke Niemann and Vincent Keymer, they all scored 7. 5points.

Abdusattorov leads the Tata Steel Masters by half a point from Sindarov after beating Bluebaum. In the final round Abdusattorov faces his nemesis from last year Erigaisi, Sindarov faces tail-ender Nguyen.

We're in for a tight finish to the Tata Steel Masters with the Uzbek players Abdusattorov and Sindarov sharing the lead after 11 rounds. Sindarov beat Erigaisi. Niemann knew he had to win today and he took huge risks against Nguyen, who was in his now customary time trouble, and this paid off with a win and a share of 3rd with Van Foreest and Bluebaum half a point behind the leaders.

Nodirbek Abdusattorov still leads the Tata Steel Masters with 5.5/8 even after losing to Anish Giri

Giri got back to 50% by beating the leader Abdusattorov. Gukesh also reached 4/8 after beating Fedoseev. Sindarov remains in clear second place after a draw with Keymer. There is a rest day on Monday.

Nodirbek Abdusattorov moved further into the lead after Vincent Keymer tried too hard and lost in their round 7 game. Anish Giri beat a clearly suffering Gukesh. Javokhir Sindarov drew with Hans Moke Niemann to remain in second place.

You'll rarely see a blunder as bad as Gukesh's against Nodirbek Abdusattorov at the highest level, especially without time trouble. Abdusattorov leads as Hans Moke Niemann was beaten by Vincent Keymer in an impressive performance in a difficult game.

Leaders Niemann and Abdusattorov drew against each other and were joined in the lead by Sindarov who won late on after previously letting go two decisive advantages against Erdogmus. There is a rest day on Thursday.

There were wins for Hans Moke Niemann over Chithambaram Aravindh, Nodirbek Abdusattorov over Thai Dai Van Nguyen and Javokhir Sindarov over Matthias Bluebaum. In addition Giri was lost against Arjun Erigaisi and Van Foreest was lost against Fedoseev but both games were drawn.

Arjun Erigaisi beat Praggnanandhaa, Niemann and Keymer took advantage of uncharacteristic serious errors from their opponents and Gukesh was denied a win by Sindarov after being in a winning position for over 30 moves. Tata Steel were the target of climate protesters who delayed the start.
