Anish Giri won the Tata Steel Masters for the first time in the best result of the Dutchman's career. Giri started the round half a point behind Abdusattorov and afterwards was grateful to his countryman Jorden Van Foreest for going for a fighting game against the leader. Giri found a way to cause his opponent Richard Rapport problems, may have missed a chance but then his opponent played 34...Kg6 which turned out to be very bad indeed and he soon brought home the full point. Abdusattorov by this time was completely lost and he couldn't find any way to resist. Magnus Carlsen caught Abdusattorov but finished third on tie-break. Giri's consistency in this event has been remarkable and was in the right place to take his chance this time. Carlsen, who would know, said he was sorry for Abdusattorov as leading such events carries uniquely tough pressures, but he has certainly enhanced his reputation. This has been a fantastic event with the pace only slackening towards the end for those out of contention. Should be a great year.

Masters Final Round 13 Sunday 29th January 11am GMT: Praggnanandhaa draw So, Erigaisi 0-1 Carlsen, Aronian 0-1 Maghsoodloo, Keymer draw Gukesh, Ding Liren draw Caruana, Giri 1-0 Rapport, Abdusattorov 0-1 Van Foreest.

Masters Official Round 13 Standings: 1st Giri 8.5pts, 2nd Abdusattorov 8pts, 3rd Carlsen 8pts, 4th Wesley So 7.5pts, 5th Caruana 7pts, 6th Maghsoodloo 7pts, 7th Aronian 6.5pts, 8th Rapport 6.5pts, 9th Praggnanandhaa 6pts, 10th Van Foreest 6pts, 11th Ding Liren 5.5pts, 12th Gukesh 5.5pts, 13th Keymer 5pts, 14th Erigaisi 4pts.

Alexander Donchenko won his final round game against Velimir Ivic to finish on 10/13 a point clear of Mustafa Yilmaz. Donchenko will play in the Masters Group next year, he played a couple of years ago but was a last minute invitee then. Stefan Beukema won the Amateur section and will play the Challengers next year.

Michiel Abeln reports from Wijk aan Zee on Tata Steel Round 13 29th Jan

Anish Giri won the 85th Tata Steel tournament! In the final round he won against Richard Rapport while tournament leader Nodirbek Abdusattorov lost against Jorden Van Foreest.

Rapport surprised Giri with a rare line in the Sicilian Rauzer. Giri had experience with this system from online blitz and bullet games and he knew how to minimize Black’s counterplay. After the opening Giri started to push but the position was still equal until Rapport blundered 34...Kg6 where Kg8 would still have kept the balance. Now within a few moves it was just over.

Meanwhile Abdusattorov faced a Sicilian Taimanov from Van Foreest. Initially White chose the modern and aggressive 7.Qf3 to which Van Foreest reacted with the rare h5. Soon the queens were exchanged and the players were in a strategic fight. White took some risk by playing 16.g5 which was justified if on move 20 White had gone for a2-a4. In the game White did not fully use his chances in a very complex position and then he went wrong with 25.Ngf6 and the exchange on g8. For some reason Black did not take on e5 on move 28, spoiling his advantage, but White was in time trouble and after a series of dubious moves there was a big mistake with 38.Be2 and Van Foreest had no problem in scoring a full point.

Carlsen played a double fianchetto against Arjun’s setup, which soon looked like a Kings Indian Structure. White first castled kingside but then brought his king over to the queenside and it was clear that Black had won the opening battle. However, slowly the position moved to equality again and then on move 34 Carlsen sacrificed a piece for two pawns to create practical chances. For a while White followed a narrow path to equality but then he went wrong with 41.Nbc3, 42.Qf1 and returning the piece on move 44. White was struggling when he made another mistake with 50.Bh6+ and Carlsen won easily.

Aronian and Maghsoodloo went for one of the more classical setups in the Sicilian Najdorf. The position was still in balance when Black decided to sacrifice an exchange on c3. White’s 26.c3 was not the best (26.Bd3 was stronger) and in time trouble Black’s advantage increased. In an already bad position Aronian made another mistake with 42.Rb1 and Maghsoodloo reached an endgame with two extra pawns and he scored the win.

Wesley So had prepared a line with a temporary pawn sacrifice against Praggnanandhaa and both players appeared to be in book for a long time. Almost by force they reached an endgame with a tiny edge for White. He won a pawn but the position was still about equal and after 52 moves it was a draw with two bare kings left on the board.

Keymer and Gukesh followed a popular line in the Nimzo Indian where Black early on deviated from main stream theory. White could have achieved some advantage if he had gone for the sharp 15.Qb3. In the game some pieces were exchanged and the position was completely equal. The players agreed a draw on move 31.

Ding Liren and Caruana decided to end their tournament with a quick draw in a Spanish opening. This was never a real game.
