The fifth round of the Tata Steel Masters saw just two decisive games but those took the winners into a share of the lead after five rounds. Round 4 leader Vidit Gujrathi held Anish Giri to a draw in a Petroff Defence. Richard Rapport managed to outplay R Praggnanandhaa after losing the opening battle. Shakhriyar Mamedyarov beat Jorden van Foreest in an Open Spanish. Vidit, Rapport and Mamedyarov now lead the tournament. Magnus Carlsen had chances to beat Nils Grandelius but only drew. Esipenko-Caruana was drawn with definite chances missed for the American. Jan-Krzysztof Duda agreed a draw in time trouble against Sergey Karjakin where he had a rather unobvious win on the board. Dubov and Shankland also drew.

Round 5 Summary

Leader Vidit Gujrathi drew with black in a Petroff Defence against Anish Giri. The game was interesting in all its phases and Vidit was critical of his play in the endgame. World Champion Magnus Carlsen would have been looking for the full point against Nils Grandelius and took a lot of risks - the computer evaluations maybe a bit misleading but the engines at least superficially liked white after 18...d5. Carlsen did end up being better and probably winning after 30...Ba6! and the computer also likes 43...Bb5 for him later on - in the end he had to settle for a draw.

Richard Rapport admitted he was out prepared in his battle against R Praggnanandhaa but he eventually prevailed in a wild struggle. Praggnanandhaa with the black pieces played 17...d3? (17...Ne5) which threw away black's advantage and 19...Ne5 put him in trouble. Rapport was better if not winning after this but it was all extremely complicated.

Shakhriyar Mamedyarov won an Open Spanish as black against Jorden van Foreest - Mamedyarov was better after the plan 20.Ng5 f5 21.Nf7 proved to be misguided but later he fought his way back and if he'd played 35.Qb7+ he'd have likely drawn, as it was after 35.Rc1 he was just lost.

Fabiano Caruana seems to be getting good positions but just can't buy a win. Caruana was black in a Semi-Slav as black against Andrey Esipenko and was happy with his play against a new interesting idea from white. Following 18.Ne2? (18.Nxe5=) Caruana was much better but eventually allowed a lot of counter play. One chance for Caruana was 33...Rh4 34.Ne6 Bxe4 instead of 33...Rh2. The game was drawn in 63 moves.

Jan-Krzysztof Duda drew with Sergey Karjakin in a game where he was in trouble for much of the game but agreed a draw - in time trouble - where both players didn't realise that Duda was actually winning with the only move 37.Rf1. Daniil Dubov maybe had a little something against Sam Shankland in a Bogo-Catalan but the game was drawn without many adventures in 37 moves.
