Vidit Gujrathi leads the Tata Steel Masters going into the first rest day with a scored of three points from four rounds. Today Vidit drew against Andrey Esipenko but this wasn't his best day and he was no doubt happy to draw on move 32. There were two decisive games; Shakhriyar Mamedyarov turned round a lost position to beat Jan-Krzysztof Duda when the latter needed more time than he had to play a tricky endgame on the run up to move 40. R Praggnanandhaa had a fairly smooth positional win against Nils Grandelius in an Exchange Gruenfeld. Magnus Carlsen drew a messy game against Jorden Van Foreest where the latter's decision to go for complications paid off even if the computers said he was lost at various points. Shankland-Rapport, Karjakin-Giri and Caruana-Dubov were all drawn with only the latter being of much interest.

Round 4 Standings: Masters: 1st Vidit 3pts; 2nd-6th Esipenko, Carlsen, Mamedyarov, Rapport, Van Foreest 2½pts; 7th-9th Duda, Caruana, Praggnanandhaa 2pts; 10th-13th Giri, Dubov, Karjakin, Shankland 1½pts; 14th Grandelius ½pt;

Round 4 Summary

Lucas van Foreest held a draw against Magnus Carlsen boldly going for complications rather than allowing Carlsen a positional grind. Van Foreest pushed his kingside pawns in front of his castled king and even gave them up. In such a non-standard position computers are always going to do better than humans but for what it's worth engines think Carlsen is winning after 33...Rf5? (33...Rf3=) that 36.Rb2? is equal after 36...Rxg5 (either) and that after 36...Bxg5 Carlsen missed 38.Ke2 winning. After that Van Foreest had a Queen for Rook, Bishop and 2 Pawns but the position was dead equal.

Shakhriyar Mamedyarov won a very sharp Semi-Tarrasch against Jan-Krzysztof Duda in a game where he was losing according to the engines but that had very little to do with anything as both sides played without compromise and which was settled in Duda's time trouble on the run up to move 40. Some moments: 25.Re8? (25.Rh1!=) black is better and after 27.Bc2 winning, 28....Bg6 seems better than 28...e4 but black is still better as he has more material although his king is in a scary position. After 31..Bc5? (31...Rh7) 32.g4+ the position is equal but black has to find 35...h3 (although I'm not sure this isn't the most obvious move) after 35...Kf3?! things are hard and 36...h3? now loses (36...Ng2).

R Praggnanandhaa bounced back from his loss yesterday to beat Nils Grandelius on the white side of an Exchange Gruenfeld. Praggnanandhaa built up a very good position out of the opening and by move 30 was winning. He felt he let some of the advantage go with 40.Kf2?! in time trouble but in truth the conversion wasn't complicated that much by this inaccuracy. Praggnanandhaa's trainer tested positive for Covid and is isolating - hence Praggnanandhaa's mask during play but being on his own doesn't seem to have affected him that much (his trainer is working with him via the Internet) and is on a solid 50%. Grandelius is struggling and like today he will be clearly targeted for a win by his opponents unless he can turn his form around, next up Magnus.

Leader Vidit Gujrathi drew against Andrey Esipenko in a Giuoco Piano where he was pushing a bit until around move 25 and after that was in danger of being worse (31...Qc8!) before a draw was agreed on move 32.

Sam Shankland and Richard Rapport drew a Petroff in 24 moves where black was in no danger at all. Sergey Karjakin isn't known as a d4 player and Anish Giri surmised he wasn't ready for a Gruenfeld as he headed quickly for a known drawing line. Fabiano Caruana and Daniil Dubov drew a Ruy Lopez Anti-Marshall. 12....Qd7 is new and the game seemed quite equal throughout.
