Vidit Gujrathi took the sole lead of the Tata Steel Masters with 2.5 points after a wild win against Daniil Dubov in the third round. Dubov played his full part in the excitement and over the board Vidit thought he must have been lost at one stage - but this assessment was probably incorrect as he found a lot of forced moves. Half a point behind there is a big group of players on two points, Both Magnus Carlsen and Jan-Krzysztof Duda after their draw, Andrey Esipenko after beating Sergey Karjakin, Richard Rapport after beating Nils Grandelius in a wild Sicilian and finally Jorden van Foreest who managed to inflict a nightmare pawn structure in an endgame against R Praggnanandhaa. Further details below.

Round 3 Standings Masters: 1st Vidit 2½pts; 2nd-6th Duda, Carlsen, Esipenko, Rapport, Van Foreest 2pts; 7th-8th Caruana, Mamedyarov 1½pts; 9th-13th Praggnanandhaa, Giri, Karjakin, Dubov, Shankland 1pt; 14th Grandelius ½pts.

Round 3 Summary

Jan-Krzysztof Duda drew as white in an anti-Marshall Ruy Lopez against Magnus Carlsen. Carlsen played 13...h6 rather than the more active 13...d5 but said he thought Duda got something after the clever 16.Qc2 and 18.d4 which he had underestimated. Carlsen felt that the worst was behind him after 22...Rb2!? 23.Qxb2 with 23.Qc4 being the way to play on. Sure enough pieces were traded and a draw was agreed on move 38.

Vidit Gujrathi won a wild battle against Daniil Dubov to take the sole lead after three rounds on 2.5/3. Dubov managed to keep Vidit's king in the middle of the board after the novelty 8.Na3. During the game Vidit thought he must have been lost but afterwards a quick check with weak engines suggested to him that he found many only moves to stay in the game. The game finished with Vidit walking his king up the board. 32.Qc8+ would have forced a draw, Dubov's 32.f3? quickly finished the game in Vidit's favour.

Andrey Esipenko defeated Sergey Karjakin in a Giuoco Piano maneuvering game. Esipenko had the better of it but Karjakin had good holding chances until he gave up a piece with 31...Reb8? (31....Re7 was very playable) - Karjakin got a running a-pawn but overestimated its value and soon had to resign.

Richard Rapport won a "super old school" sharp Sicilian with black against Nils Grandelius. Rapport wasn't even sure he wasn't losing at some point (it seems not) after grabbling a g-pawn. Grandelius gradually lost his compensation for the pawn and Rapport went on to win in 31 moves.

Jorden van Foreest defeated R Praggnanandhaa in a rook and pawn endgame where the Indian had a truly disgusting pawn structure. At first the pawns gave Praggnanandhaa dynamic play but after 25...f3?! (25...Qf8 had to be tried) the game quick transposed to the aforementioned hopeless endgame which van Foreest eventually converted although he conceded his technique was perhaps not the best.

Anish Giri vs Shakhriyar Mamedyarov was a quick draw in a Meran style Slav where there wasn't a lot left to play for at the end.

Fabiano Caruana was held by Sam Shankland in a Berlin Defence in 70 moves in the last game to finish.
