Magnus Carlsen was content to take a quick draw with black against Sergey Karjakin in Round 10 of the Tata Steel Masters. Karjakin had taken all sorts of risks yesterday against Praggnanandhaa but today didn't even try against Carlsen. Behind Carlsen no-one got closer, Anish Giri drew and Vidit Gujrathi lost to Praggnanandhaa a sharp game he had chances to win. The final day off is on Thursday.

Former leader Shakhriyar Mamedyarov drew with black in a an interesting Open Catalan. Anish Giri stayed in second place after drawing against Jan Krzysztof Dubov in a sharp English where perhaps he had to be careful. Fabiano Caruana has had a very up and down tournament, today it was down again as he lost to Richard Rapport. 21.Rd4 looks like a bad error but he wasn't immediately punished but he couldn't save a worse endgame. Andrey Esipenko described his win against Jorden Van Foreest as "strange". He built up a winning position quite quickly, didn't find the best (32.g4) and had to win things again. Van Foreest blundered with 44...Qc3? (44...Qg3+ is not much worse for black) and went on to lose in 60 moves.

The two tail enders both won also. Vidit Gujrathi will surely be pretty mad at himself for how he managed to lose to Praggnanandhaa. Vidit was better in an extremely sharp game where the Kings were on opposite flanks, he was doing well but the inaccurate 31.Re4 (31.Rd4) set up the really poor 33.Qxh6 after which he was lost. 36...Rd8 (36...Ra8!) reduced Praggnanandhaa's advantage a lot and their were mutual errors on the run up to first time control. In the end Praggnanandhaa ground out a win in the endgame. Nils Grandelius also won - against Daniil Dubov - he supposed he must be losing out of the opening but it doesn't seem to be the case, he was however winning after 21.Ka2? however in time trouble he lost much of this advantage and on move 43.Nxa5 is equal. With 43.Nd2?! b4 44.cxb4? (44.c4) Dubov was losing again and this time he lost.
