Carlsen beats Mamedyarov to regain the sole lead of the Tata Steel Masters after 9 Rounds

Magnus Carlsen beat joint leader Shakhriyar Mamedyarov to take the sole lead in the Tata Steel Masters. The game was a sharp open Catalan. Carlsen wasn't surprised that Mamedyarov gave up the exchange and he had decent compensation for it but after 18...h6? (18...Be6 and the game continues) things fell apart for black at rapid speed.
Anish Giri stayed in contention by beating Sam Shankland in a drawish theoretical endgame. After 24...b6? (24...e4 or Nf7 were necessary) 25.g4! Shankland's position just collapsed. Vidit Gujrathi stayed in contention after holding a tricky endgame against Richard Rapport. Sergey Karjakin won a wild game where he really took some risks against Praggnanandhaa to move to +1. Fabiano Caruana too took on a wild double edged game against Nils Grandelius and was rewarded in the run up to the first time control 32.Rad1 (32.Nd6 was strictly necessary) Bxa3 gave him the win. Jan-Krzysztof Duda must have been winning against Andrey Esipenko in a sharp position but he had to settle for a draw in the end. Jorden van Foreest too will have been disappointed only to be able to draw against Daniil Dubov who even before his default was clearly a little short of his best.
Arjun Erigaisi leads the Challengers by a full two points with four rounds to go and barring a huge shock will qualify for the Masters next year. Four draws ought to do it but three out of his four remaining opponents are in the bottom half of the table. One of his chasers Nguyen Thai Dai Van does play him in Round 12 on Saturday but with the black pieces.
