The Tata Steel Masters started with two decisive games with wins for Alireza Firouzja over Vladislav Kovalev after a terrible blunder in the opening and Jorden Van Foreest over Yu Yangyi in the longest game of the day. The battle between Magnus Carlsen and Anish Giri was somewhat disappointing after Carlsen was forced to liquidate to a draw after his opening sideline in the English didn't have its desired effect.

Pavel Eljanov, Surya Shekhar Ganguly and Erwin L'Ami were winners in the Challengers Group.

Round 1 Standings: 1st-2nd Firouzja, Van Foreest 1pt, 3rd= Carlsen, Caruana, Giri, So, Anand, Duda, Vitiugov, Artemiev, Xiong and Dubov 0.5pts 13th-14th Yu, Kovalev 0pts

Round 2 pairings Sunday 12th Jan 12:30GMT: Dubov - Kovalev, Duda - Firouzja, Artemiev - Vitiugov, So - Anand, Giri - Caruana, Yu - Carlsen, Xiong - Van Foreest.

Magnus Carlsen got nothing out of the opening as white against Anish Giri in the English Opening and was perhaps even in a little danger of being worse himself. Instead a forcing line produced a completely drawn endgame in just 25 moves.

Alireza Firouzja beat Vladislav Kovalev in a Ruy Lopez Chigorin where the latter mixed up his move order with 16...c4?! (Bd7) and compounded matters with 17...Nd7? (Qb6 had to be tried) after which it he was just a pawn down for nothing.

Jorden Van Foreest beat Yu Yangyi in the final game to finish. His 1. e4 c5 2. Nf3 e6 3. c3 Sicilian led to a small nagging initiative which grew to a nice advantage in a Rook endgame around move 28, this was still practically difficult for both sides, according to computer analysis 45...Kf3 was the decisive blunder (45...Rb8) and the point was brought home slowly but surely by Van Foreest after that in 75 moves.

Viswanathan Anand was held by Vladislav Artemiev in a 5...c5 Caro-Kann, a variation he plays himself as black. 12.Na3 was a rare idea. Anand gave up the exchange with 26.Rxe6 but the position remained stubbornly level. 28.Bd6 was another try suggested after the game but it probably wouldn't have altered the result.

Wesley So chose a rare variation of the Gruenfeld against Fabiano Caruana as black and they quickly reached a drawn double rook endgame.

Jeffery Xiong was pressing for a long time against Daniil Dubov in a messy Rossolimo Sicilian but nothing remained of the advantage after 43.c4?! and the game was drawn in 42 moves.

Nikita Vitiugov was winning against Jan-Krzysztof Duda (most clearly with 43.Bc5 Rb2 44.Be7) but just a few moves later after Duda managed to get his king out of the corner the game was already equal.
