Fabiano Caruana wins the Tata Steel Masters for the first time with a round to spare

Fabiano Caruana wrapped up victory in the Tata Steel Masters in round 12 after beating Jan-Krzysztof Duda. Magnus Carlsen could only draw his game against Vladislav Artemiev. This is Caruana's first victory in the Masters but it does complete a unique hat-trick of winning all three groups (C-Group in 2008 and B-Group in 2009 - Carlsen was second on tie-break in his best B-Group finish).

Caruana got a large advantage in the Catalan Opening early on but Duda found some clever defensive ideas. Caruana still had very good winning chances and he won on move 49. Carlsen too got a significant edge out of the opening but gradually this advantage reduced to nothing in the endgame. Afterwards Carlsen said that he had some thinking to do as his performance in classical chess in the last few months was poor.

The only other decisive game of the day was Daniil Dubov's crushing of a woefully out of form Yu Yangyi. Yu's position was simply pitiful only a few moves after the poor 16...Ra7? (16...Rb8). Yu will just be glad to go home and put this event behind him. Jorden Van Foreest played solidly after his loss in Round 11 and drew with white against Wesley So. Van Foreest faces Anish Giri tomorrow with half a point more and this game will decide the top Dutch finisher. Giri played on for over 7 hours against Jeffery Xiong without much prospect of victory a pawn up in a Queen endgame. Anand-Kovalev was a 20 move draw. Nikita Vitiugov looked to be getting somewhere against Alireza Firouzja but a neat tactical sequence from the youngster equalised things.

In the B-Group leader David Anton Guijarro was crushed by tail-ender Max Warmerdam in a nervy display. Anton still leads the B-Group by half a point from Nodirbek Abdusattorov, Erwin L'Ami and Pavel Eljanov (who importantly for the first tie-break he has defeated). Anton plays Lucas Van Foreest in the final round.

Round 12 Standings 1st Caruana 9pts/12 2nd Carlsen, 7.5pts 3rd So 7pts 4th-5th Van Foreest, Dubov 6.5pts, 6th-10th Giri, Anand, Duda, Artemiev, Firouzja 6pts, 11th Xiong 5.5pts, 12th Vitiugov 4.5pts, 13th Yu 4pts, 14th Kovalev 3.5pts.
