Alireza Firouzja leads the Tata Steel Masters on 2.5/3 after beating Artemiev

Alireza Firouzja continued his impressive start to the Tata Steel Masters with a convincing third round victory over Vladislav Artemiev in a sharp Caro Kann Advanced. Firouzja might well have finished things off earlier but his win took him to 2.5/3 half a point clear of the pack.

Fabiano Caruana won against a struggling Yu Yangyi in a Petroff Defence and Jorden Van Foreest repeated his use of the c3 Sicilian for a nice win against Daniil Dubov although things were in danger of getting messy at one point. This means that white has scored 9 unanswered wins in the Masters Group, it might have been more, Viswanathan Anand accepted a draw in a favourable but sharp position against Anish Giri.

World Champion Magnus Carlsen didn't do well with white, being very much on the worse half of the draw against Jeffery Xiong. This brings Carlsen to 110 games undefeated, tying the accepted record by Sergei Tiviakov. It is 531 days since his loss to Shakriyar Mamedyarov in Round 9 of Biel on 31st July 2018. Since then he's scored +36 =74 -0 (stats Tarjei J. Svensen on twitter). Carlsen faces Jorden Van Foreest tomorrow for the record.

Nikita Vitiugov didn't manage to make much of an edge against Wesley So and Vladislav Kovalev got on the scoreboard with a draw against Jan-Krzysztof Duda.

All the games were drawn in the Challengers Group where Mamedov, Eljanov, Ganguly, Smeets and L'Ami share first with 2/3.
