Fabiano Caruana was finally held to a draw after 6 hours of play by Anish Giri after obtaining a winning Rook and Pawn endgame. Caruana leads with 3/4 but he missed a chance (55...Ra3 was the last win) to bring in the full point. Giri, who was one of the favourites to win the tournament has lost one and saved two in a very scratchy start to the event.
Pavel Eljanov won a pawn against Loek van Wely but it was only with a trap 31.Kh1 in his opponent's time trouble hoping precisely for the mistake 31...Rf2? that loses.
Sergey Karjakin got a positional advantage in a quiet Giuoco Piano against Evgeny Tomashevsky. In time pressure for both players Karjakin obtained a winning advantage and his opponent lost on time.
Hou Yifan won a fine attacking game against David Navara.
Magnus Carlsen got little or no advantage with white against Shakhriyar Mamedyarov and the game finished in a draw. Whilst he hasn't been in any real trouble Carlsen hasn't created many winning chances either.
Michael Adams looked in a lot of trouble against Wei Yi in the endgame but the Chinese player didn't find a way to exploit his extra pawn and the game was drawn in 52 moves.
Wesley So drew against Ding Liren in a balanced game.
Aleksey Dreev has reached 4/4. The B-Group continues with a round on Wednesday.
