The 44th World Chess Olympiad took place in Chennai, India Friday 29th July to Wednesday 10th August. The top seeds were USA, India, Norway (with World Champion Magnus Carlsen), Spain, Poland, Azerbaijan, Netherlands, Ukraine, Germany and England. Missing are Russia and China. Play starts at 15:00 local time which is 10:30am UK time. The event was originally going to take place in Russia until their invasion of Ukraine and is the first Olympiad held since 2018.

A youthful Uzbekistan squad took the Gold medal, the key match being against the India 2 team in Round 10. Armenia finished second and India 2 third, the India team finished fourth.

In the women's event there was a really close battle with a major shakeup in the final round. India had 17 points, Poland, Azerbaijan, Ukraine and Georgia had 16 points. The final standings were Ukraine Gold from Georgia Silver on 18 points and India taking bronze ahead on tie-break of the USA and Kazakhstan all on 17 points.
