Nakamura gets small compensation with final round win against Dortmund winner Kramnik

Vladimir Kramnik slightly took the shine off his fantastic performance at the 39th Dortmund tournament by losing to Hikaru Nakamura in the final round. Kramnik had already secured first place and his 10th Dortmund title so the result was not of much relevance. Kramnik made a rather speculative but not unsound sacrifice of a piece against Nakamura but this is not in his style and he quickly went astray. Although Nakamura was far from clinical in finishing the game off he brought the point home securely enough in the end. Le Quang Liem - Anish Giri and Georg Meier - Ruslan Ponomariov were fairly uninteresting draws. Le Quang Liem was in clear second place on 5.5/10. Young Dutchman Robin van Kampen won the Helmut-Kohls-Turnier. Mikhail Zaitsev by far and away the highest rated player won the Open on 7.5/9 half a point clear of Glenn De Schampheleire.

Vladimir Kramnik has played really well in this tournament. Back to his very accurate best. But in general he is not a great sacrificial player, at least not since his youth, and his piece sacrifice against the struggling Hikaru Nakamura was certainly not an obvious win for him. Perhaps he thought that losing wouldn't cost him too much but a win might be something useful to have in the bank against a rival for later. As it was Kramnik quickly went wrong but Nakamura's bad form meant that he certainly didn't finish things off quickly but in the end he scored his second win of the event. Nakamura certainly has some thinking to do.

Le Quang Liem and Anish Giri drew a fairly quiet Queen's Indian by repetition in 38 moves.

Georg Meier draw Ruslan Ponomariov

Georg Meier lost a few rating points and didn't win a game but in general performed reasonably well, and should have beaten the out of form Nakamua in the first half. In the final round pieces were traded off into a drawn ending which finished with repetition on move 44.
